March is National Multiple Sclerosis, Colorectal Cancer, Endometriosis and Trisomy Awareness month. Many illnesses that we at SB OBGYN are here to assist you with.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic illness affecting your central nervous system. The body’s own immune system attacks the protective lining of the protects nerve fibers. This causes inflammation and scar tissue which makes it hard for your brain to send signals to the rest of your body. The most common symptom is fatigue and inability to walk.
Colorectal Cancer is a cancer that starts in the colon (large intestine) or rectum (anal). The American National Society states that 1 in 24 women will develop this type of cancer. The most famous woman, Farrah Fawcett, lost her battle with this type of cancer at age 62. Common symptoms can be constipation or diarrhea, and changes in stool color, shape and contains blood. This cancer has been associated with HPV infections; so prevention is ever so important and testing for your risk is available.
Endometriosis is a condition where the lining of your uterus grows outside of your uterus. It can grow on your ovaries, bowel, and pelvis. Endometriosis is a very common gynecological condition affecting up to 10% of women. The number one symptoms are pelvic pain and inflammation. You are not alone and we can assist in treating this condition.
Trisomy 8 is the condition that affects human chromosomes where three chromosomes exist verses just two. It is a rare disorder that is more often found in males versus females at a ratio of 4 to 1. It is rare, as only 1 out of 25,000 – 50,000 occur in pregnancy. Some children born with this condition show physical symptoms while others do not. Genetic testing is available to all women throughout her pregnancy. Our office recommends such testing as a standard part of obstetrical care.
